BlobFarm — Home of the most fascinating living being on the planet
Everything started with a scientific obsession. Physarum polycephalum, nicknamed the blob, is a living being that defies all categories. Neither plant, nor animal, nor fungus. A giant, yellow, brainless cell — yet capable of solving a maze between two food sources (Nakagaki, Nature, 2000) and building networks with efficiency comparable to the Tokyo rail system (Tero et al., Science, 2010).
When we discovered that it was almost impossible to obtain one in France outside of a laboratory, the answer was obvious: we had to democratize access to this extraordinary organism. That became BlobFarm.
What we do
We cultivate sclerotia — the blob’s dormant state — in France. Kept dry and away from light, they remain viable for at least a year, often much longer, and can be brought back to life in just a few steps: soak them briefly in water, shake them well, and place them on agar. First signs in 24 hours on average at 20–25 °C, full revival within 48 hours. You receive a living being. You bring it to life. You observe it.
An organism from a very ancient lineage
The blob belongs to the Amoebozoa, a supergroup of eukaryotes whose molecular clocks date back more than a billion years. However, the species itself cannot be dated: myxomycetes almost never fossilize, so no one knows how long Physarum polycephalum has existed in this form. We prefer to tell you that rather than sell you a round number.
Our scientific commitment
We try to stay on the right side of the line: when a claim comes from a published article, we cite the article; when it is popular science or a hypothesis, we say so. Our main references are studies published in Nature, Science, and the Journal of Physics D, and the researchers who have advanced this discipline — Toshiyuki Nakagaki (Hokkaido University), Atsushi Tero, and Chris Reid. You can verify everything on our scientific sources page, and if you find an error, write to us: we will correct it.
What we will never do
- Sacrifice the quality of the living organism for cost
- Sell for non-educational or non-research purposes
- Invent marketing numbers (reviews, sales, press mentions)
- Communicate like a gadget shop
The blob deserves better than that. And so do you.
Shall we talk?
