Still hesitating? The Kit Blob Lab is the only one that includes both strains — and therefore the only one that lets you run the strain race, an experiment impossible anywhere else. It also adds the maze and the Tokyo network, the two experiments published in Nature and Science, and shipping is covered across the EU by Chronopost International.
Adopt a blob (Physarum polycephalum) in 48 hours. Our BlobFarm kits are designed to help you wake up, raise, and observe your blob at home — with a simple protocol, laboratory-grade equipment, and a printed protocol sheet.
What is a BlobFarm blob kit?
Each kit contains at least: 2 sclerotia, sterile Petri dishes, laboratory-grade agar for pouring gels, organic oat flakes for feeding, a set of precision tools, and a printed protocol sheet. And in all kits, the provided agar allows you to pour the dishes at least twice.
How to choose between our 4 kits?
Two questions are enough: how many Petri dishes, and how many experiments. The comparison table below gives the details.
- You just want to try it out: Blob Solo Kit (€18.00) — 2 dishes, no experiments: you wake it up, you observe, you subculture once
- You want to raise it: Blob Classic Kit (€23.90) — 4 dishes to manage continuous subcultures, 2 experiments (choice + colored diffusion), with dyes (blue E133 + red E122) and the pipette in the box
- You want to experiment: Blob Discovery Kit (€45.00) — 9 dishes and 4 experiments, with the U-trap and the optimal network
- 🏆 Our best seller: Blob Lab Kit (€68.00) — 19 dishes, 8 experiments, the 2 strains included, the maze, the strain race, the Tokyo network, and free shipping within France
Why the Blob Lab Kit is the one we recommend
It is the only one to contain the most famous blob experiments: Nakagaki’s maze (Nature, 2000), the Tokyo network (Science, 2010), and the strain race, adapted from the same maze protocol. Its 19 dishes are divided into three formats, one for each use — 60 mm for waking up and subculturing, 90 mm for standard experiments (including the maze), 120 mm square for Tokyo. It also includes 4 sclerotia (2 Major Tom + 2 Australian, both standard strains), 15 doses of laboratory-grade agar, and 11 tools. And it is the only kit that exceeds the threshold for free shipping within France on its own.
Which blob strain to start with?
For the Solo, Classic, and Discovery kits, there are two strains to choose from, both at the same price — the strain is a free choice, you pick the one you like. The Blob Lab Kit comes with both 2 strains automatically (2 sclerotia of each), with no choice to make.
- Major Tom (LU352) — our heroine strain: the Physarum polycephalum sent to the International Space Station by CNES with Thomas Pesquet in 2021. Bright yellow, vigorous network.
- Australian Physarum polycephalum — an Australian isolate, just as fascinating.
How does the waking-up process work?
The BlobFarm protocol is simple: using tweezers, dip the sclerotium in a little water, take it out and shake it well — rehydrated, not wet — place it on the agar, put 2-3 oat flakes 1 cm away, close the dish, store in the dark, and wait 24 to 48 hours. Complete guide here.

Frequently asked questions
At what age can you adopt a blob?
From 7 years old with an adult, 10 years old independently.
How long does a blob live?
The active plasmodium lives for several months with regular subculturing on fresh agar; without maintenance, a dish lasts a few weeks. That is why the number of dishes matters: without fresh agar on hand, no subculturing.
Do you need additional equipment at home?
No. Just tap water and a spot at 19-25°C.
Can you give a blob kit as a gift?
Yes! The Blob Discovery Kit is designed for that, and the Blob Lab Kit is perfect to make a real impression.
