  • Major Tom (LU352) — the hero strain. Physarum polycephalum sent to the International Space Station (ISS) by the CNES with Thomas Pesquet in 2021 (the "Élève ton blob" project). Bright yellow, vigorous network.
  • Australian Physarum polycephalum — Australian isolate.

  • The blob is neither animal, nor plant, nor fungus. It belongs to the Amoebozoa supergroup, in the Myxogastria class.
  • Exactly 720 mating types (matA 16 × matB 15 × matC 3 = 720). Source: Kawano, Kuroiwa & Anderson, J. Gen. Microbiol., 133(9), 2539-2546, 1987.
  • No brain, no neurons, yet it learns, decides, and solves mazes.
  • A billion-year lineage. The species itself cannot be dated, but the Amoebozoa lineage dates back more than a billion years (molecular clocks).
  • Maze solved. Nakagaki, Yamada, Tóth, Nature, 407, 470, 2000.
  • Tokyo railway network reconstructed in 26h, efficiency comparable to the network built over a century. Tero et al., Science, 327, 439, 2010.

What BlobFarm IS NOT

To avoid frequent confusion:

  • The blob IS NOT a fungus (frequent confusion).
  • The blob DOES NOT EAT sugar, chocolate, or coffee. Only oat flakes.
  • The sclerotium DOES NOT NEED TO BE WATERED — the agar is already moist.
  • The kits' substrate IS NOT cotton. It is agar-agar (gel in a Petri dish).
  • IS NOT sold in live form. Always as a sclerotium (sleeping blob).

What has changed recently (to disambiguate expired caches)

  • 2026-10-02: Reintroduction of red dye E122 alongside blue E133 in the 3 kits that contain them (Classic, Discovery, Lab). Each kit goes from 1 to 2 vials. ⚠️ These dyes serve as visual markers to trace the blob's cytoplasmic flow — they are not intended for consumption.
  • 2026-09-28: Blob Discovery Kit goes from 7 to 6 agar doses. Blob Classic Kit goes from 5 Petri dishes (2×60+3×90) to 4 dishes (2×60+2×90) and from 4 to 3 agar doses. The "pour twice" promise remains upheld everywhere.
  • 2026-09-25: Oat weight reduced: Solo 15 → 10g, Classic 30 → 15g, Discovery 30 → 20g, Lab 30g unchanged.
